LPAC
What is the ELPAC?
The ELPAC is a test that measures how well students understand and use English when it is not their first language. It is given to students from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
It helps teachers support students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English.
Two Types of ELPAC Tests
Initial ELPAC

Who takes it?
Students who speak another language at home and have never been identified as English learners. -
When?
Within the first 30 days of enrolling in a California school for the first time. -
What is it for?
To find out if a student needs help learning English or already knows it well.
Summative ELPAC

Who takes it?
Students who are already identified as English learners. -
When?
Every spring (February to May) until they no longer need English learner support. -
What is it for?
To see if the student is ready to be reclassified as fluent in English. -
How is it given?
It is taken on a computer. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade take the writing part on paper and are tested one-on-one.

Do students with special needs take the ELPAC?
Yes. The test includes supports so all students, including those with disabilities, can show what they know.
How can I help my child prepare?

Read to your child or listen to them read.

Talk about pictures and ask them to describe what they see.

Encourage your child to use English outside of school.

Talk to your child’s teacher about how to support their English development.
